Anyone who knows my shenanigans also knows I'm crazy for movie posters. I saw a recent "best of list" for the 50 best action movie posters of all time and it was a total mainstream kick in the nugget sack. What kind of ignorant hipster dildo puts the circle jerk flick 300 in the #1 spot? A tool. That's who. So I've decided to put my two cents of bullshit into the opinion machine with my own damn list. What I require in an action movie poster is not always based on layout and design. My criteria is mainly action or hot gals. I don't want to see some pretty boy, no matter how aesthetically pleasing the poster may be, trying to act tough with nothing going down. Since it would have filled the list, I left out VHS covers, Spaghetti Westerns and many posters that would of required more thought than a pot of coffee allows. I could of filled this whole thing up with Women In Prison posters but I'll save that for another day.

#30 DEAR GOD NO!
Yeah, I know what your thinking, "You can't do that, it's your film". Damn right I can. Obviously this list is biased. I'm not a goddamned scientist. Actually I think this should be #1 but I'm getting the shameless promotion out of the way. So there.

#29 DRAGSTRIP RIOT
The actual film is a snoozefest (it's no Dragstrip Girl) but check out the way out poster action, man. One of the best taglines ever. I like how evenly stacked the fight is too. Well, he does have a car but the other guy has a wrench. Car beats motorcycle but I know fist don't beat wrench! Golly willickers I'm confused and they are coming right at me!

#28 BLACK CAESAR
Hail to the motherfuckin' yeah, Caesar. One of the best films of the 70's with the best soundtrack of the 70's has one killer poster. How killer? It has thugs protecting the logo!

Not the best illustration but I dig the action and sheer ballyhoo of this poster.

Not only is this mean motor scooter burning out on a rival, he's draggin' one too! Love how the sleazy broad's crotch is a headlight. Top shelf.

#24 THE BONNIE PARKER STORY
Hell yeah! My favorite type of machine gun being blasted through a bullet riddled window by a cigar smoking doll. AIP ruled the drive-in 1-sheet realm.

# 23 SUKEBAN HUNTERS
Rockin' Jelly Beans poster for the Sukeban Hunters films is more stylish than I usually like from a film poster. BUT! The curves on this female illustration pre-moisten my stache.

#22 TOMCATS
Also known as GETTING EVEN, this crazy regional rapin' flick packs all the right elements into a 1-sheet. A great tagline, stabbin' cabin and white trash crack make this one I'm proud to own. Speaking of white trash....

#21 CONVOY
This critically misunderstood flick is awesome and the poster throws in an explosion which is always a plus.

#20 THE BLACK GESTAPO
A gem of a film. The poster has these confused cretins gunnin' down whitey and keeping his sluttiest daughter
all in front of black power grabbin' lightning! Right on and solid.

#19 MODERN YAKUZA: OUTLAW KILLER
Bunta Sugawara is a total ass kicker and this poster shows that if you mess with him, he's gonna come at
your sorry ass with a butcher knife and a motherfucking bar stool, bitch! Kinji Fukasaku's best film. Yeah,
I said it you Battle Royale fanboys.

#18 SPEED DRIVER
Holy shit! The poster can't contain these crazy assholes! They are exploding through two way traffic to land on your face! It will make you nauseous if you stare at it to long. Beware.

What again? Damn skippy. This is an awesome image that says I shot whitey whatcha gonna do copper! Top of the world Bitches!

#16 THUNDERBOLT & LIGHTBOLT
I love the composition of this poster and what I like even better is Clint telling the viewer, "Yeah, I got
some square looking clothes, but dig my big ass gun! Too late, I blew a bowling ball sized hole through you, punk. Now go fuck a duck."

#15 WAR GODDESS
Over here! Throw her on me, goddess of the camel toe. Terrence Young really should be considered a great
auteur for his Hammer Horror films and his mastery of booze. If you don't like this cat fight extravaganza, you are dead to me.

#14 FATHER'S DAY
As much as I dislike Canadian borders and find Loyd Kaufman to be a cancer on Independent filmmakers, I do like the talented Astron 6. As always, Mr. Hodge delivers the goods with one twisted, ribald and curiously exciting old school poster showcasing some bottom boob. Don't get that often.

#13 DEATH WISH 3
Throw Chucky Bronson on a poster with a big ol' gun and people will buy tickets. Very similar to most of his films but what I dig about this one is that at his back is civilization or his romanticized world while he fires at reality and the punks messin' up the good ol' days. The moral of the story is lay down with Chuck or move next door a you will get gang rapped by goons.

#12 DEATH RIDERS
This delivers the action. It's thrilling enough to be hang gliding into bullets but check out James Coburn in the bottom right. He don't give a fuck! He's gonna shoot the pilot because it's a goddamned suicide mission, people! No one get's out alive!

#11 LIVE AND LET DIE
There are tons of good Bond posters, some great ones with sexy Robert McGinnis gals but this French McGinnis poster is crazy too. Connery casually insults gravity as Donald Pleasance's rocket ship, scheme, cat and evil volcano lair go KABOOM!

#10 WOMEN'S PRISON MASSACRE

I love Bruno Mattei. Who is he on this poster? Gilbert? Oh, Uncle Bruno. This poster is panty snatching awesome from the over the top illustrations to the crazy headline.I also love the strange perspective of the helicopter. The bitches be busting out ! Send in the RC copter.

#8 THE EXTERMINATOR 2
Great color and a poster that says everything is gonna burn. And I'm the guy doin' it! Bwahahahahaha!!!! Like Fahrenheit 451 if books were scumbags!

#7 HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN
Tom Hodge goes Joe Colemanesque on some Hauer. Great layout, crazy imagery and a fantastic logo. Dig the shotgun shells. Already a classic. Yeah, The Dude is on here three times but he's that damn good people.

#6 DEATH RACE 2000
The graphic on this British Quad reflects futuristic ideas from a style and perspective that screams 70s. You know what your getting when you buy a ticket here. Beautiful.

#5 CRASH
This wacky movie isn't half as nuts as the poster. Just stare at it awhile. Have you ever seen accident victims from a demonic car driven by an idol? Didn't think so.

#4 THE GREAT TEXAS DYNAMITE CHASE
Yeah, baby. I don't know if I can stop looking up at your crotches long enough to be concerned with the lit TNT your gonna stick up my poop chute and the gun pointed at my ugly mug. Love it. A different take from the thousands of hot gal with guns posters. Tough ladies with snatches and cleavage win every time.

#3 ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
Plisken may be a pissed off American but this Italian poster is the one that says, "Get out of my way, got no time!" There are numerous Italian post apocalyptic posters like this but this is the one to own in my opinion.

#2 DANGER DIABOLIK
This unique ripped up Italian poster is the embodiment of the anarchy caused by John Phillip Law as Diabolik. Made in two versions, this one pours my beer.

#1 THE GAUNTLET
The master of fantasy art brings the grit to one of the best action film posters ever made. Every stroke masterfully captures the desperate situation. The bullet ridden bus is gorgeous and the facial expressions are timeless. They must have known it was gonna be baddass because they sure gave him the canvas.
I miss Frank. What a beautiful bastard.

Have I made you want to wipe the dingle berries from your turd cutter with the 300 poster? I sure hope so. Reply away with your favorites but don't be a Todd and talk about some stupid photoshop head job.

New release from Weak Show

On April 14th, Shriek Show will release the PRISON GIRLS COLLECTION, a grouping of the unrelated genre films SHADOW DEAD RIOT (2006), WOMEN IN FURY (1986) and VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON (1982). The MSRP on this is $19.99 but I've already seen preorders around $14.99. All three films were previously released in anamorphic widescreen on DVD and VIOLENCE IN A WOMEN'S PRISON was released by Shock-O-Rama under the title CAGED WOMEN as a bonus disc for their WOMEN'S PRISON MASSACRE UNCUT! DVD; which made sense because they were both Bruno Matei films. Why Shriek Show wants to stick SHADOW DEAD RIOT in this collection is beyond me. Yeah, it does have locked up broads but it's a 4 year old loaf of shit! There are enough unreleased titles from the 80's (THE NAKED CAGE & THE CONCRETE JUNGLE come to mind) to make this effort feel super slack stupid pants. No word on the presentations or any extras here. Judging by the no frills box cover (is that clip art for a work out video?) this is probably packaging wrapped around the three individual DVD's like Shriek Show did for their JUNGLE HORRORS, SS HELL PACK, etc. I recommend buying WOMEN IN FURY used for $5.00 and Shock-O-Rama's WOMEN'S PRISON MASSACRE UNCUT! set used for $10 on Amazon. That way you come out of the deal with 3 good movies for the same price.

And what the hell is up with Shriek Show's (a.k.a. Media Blasters) website!? The beginning of your releases always scare the bejesus out of me with loud ass effects promoting your brands and website but your internet presence has been clunky for 10 years. The website has never worked smoothly and locks up all three web browsers on my computer. Shut your damn noise boxes and hire someone other than your cousins to update and design. Jeez. Some of us would love to rent your theatrical releases if the link worked. Hopefully this set will be mastered correctly unlike the experience I had with their FREEZE ME disc many years back. UGH! Not to mention all the discs that didn't include some of the bullet points on the package! To hell with it. This company is dead to me. Buying a DVD shouldn't be a trip to the dentist.

Poor little flower girl Kathleen Storm (Sylvia Sidney) has just married the man of her dreams, fancy-lad Standish McNeil (Gene Raymond). Before the couple can fly to Russia and start a new life that will most likely have him killed on the front lines, Kathleen's gangster ex-boyfriend, Kid Athens, shows up to rub em' out, see. Seems the old thug never got over this dame and vowed to kill anyone who took dem' gams away. A copper shows up to get Kathleen as a witness in a case against Kidjust as the thug is breaking into her apartment. He fills the flatfoot full of lead, leaving the couple to take the wrap. Hotshot Assistant Attorney, John Hartman, who works for Kid Athens, manipulates the jury to a guilty verdict. Standish is sent to death row and Kathleen to tuna town. Thus begins the mucho melodrama of failed appeals, publicity stunts, undying love, stoolies, riots, bust outs and the hangman's noose.

Writer Ernest Booth was serving a life sentence in Folsom Penitentiary for bank robbery when he wrote this script with Louis Weitzenkorn. After his early parole, due to health reasons, in 1937, Booth would write the prison flicks WOMEN WITHOUT NAMES (1940) and MEN OF SAN QUENTIN (1942). His script steers clear of some overly dramatic pitfalls common with these pictures. Unfortunately for Ernest Booth, he didn't steer clear of the law. In 1941 he was arrested and questioned in a case involving the death of wealthy socialite Florence Stricker. As a result of the arrest, he was jailed on a weapons violation charge. Several years later Booth was found guilty of a string of armed robberies and sentenced to life in San Quentin where he died from tuberculosis. Paramount really packs in the production values with some impressive action sequences and more extras than I have ever seen in a Women In Prison Film! Gloomy and fast paced, LADIES OF THE BIG HOUSE is solid precode trash that should be sought out by ol' timey exploitation lovers.

2010 Oscar Picks

Its Oscar time again. Is that your enthusiasm or your lunch I smell? Yeah, I know. CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE wasn’t nominated so why does the sultan of sleaze care about the finest cinema have to offer? Well, I try to watch all the nominated screeners to gauge the level of dishonesty involved in this annual douche bag popularity contest. I also like to bet on just about anything. For those willing to wager, I have Mickey Rooney at #1 on my 2010 celebrity death list. Just saying.

So let’s get to the list of people you wouldn’t even join for free brunch.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role:

• Penelope Cruz (Nine)

• Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air)
• Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart)

• Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air)
• Mo’Nique (Precious)

I didn’t see NINE. When I heard they were going to queer up Fellini’s masterpiece 8 ½ by turning it into a musical, I tossed all my Judi Dench spank material in the bin. Cruz won last year for VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA so odds are she’s a loser this year. Anna Kendrick phoned in an easy role. Her cast made her look better than she actually is so this is big skip-a-roo. Gyllenhaal and Farmiga both showed some skin in similar low key multi dimensional roles but neither was as memorable as Mo’Nique bringing to life one of the best female screen villains of all time. If Lionsgate lobbied the academy as much as Fox Searchlight & Paramount, Mo’Nique is the clear winner.

Somehow I missed the LAST STATION. Oh yeah, it’s about Tolstoy. That’s how I fucking missed it! Plummer may win because he’s old but it’s only his first nomination. I’m betting most of the Academy doesn’t give a duck fuck about Russian writers either. I hear he’s a real dick to film crews so to hell with that twink fucker. Matt Damon didn’t have a big enough character arch in INVICTUS and Tucci was wasted (better in JULIE & JULIA) in the goofy THE LOVELY BONES; count them horses out of the race. Woody Harrelson should be moved to the best actor category since he had more screen time than Waltz, Tucci and Damon combined. How in the hell a pot smoking liberal environmentalist could bring that level of complex emotion and willful suspension of disbelief to a jar head without showing any of his political bias is a testament to his great acting skill. The scene in which he silently listens to Ben Foster’s monologue, his face alone finally revealing the broken humanity inside, is one of the greatest acting performances ever filmed. He will loose to Christopher Waltz. He got to use multiple languages and played a villain. Oscilloscope Laboratories doesn’t have the money to petition the Academy like the Weinstein Company and their screener DVD was really cheap looking. It’s the only award Inglorious Basterds will win.

Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia)

This one is easy. Sandra Bullock can only play small variations on one role, nobody gives a flying adult diaper about Oscar winner Helen Mirren anymore, Carey Mulligan doesn’t have the physical flaw required to bring home gold in her miscast role and Gabourney Sidibie’s great performance is probably the only role she can play. Since winning for Sophie’s Choice in 1983, Streep hasn’t won in her last 11 nominations. She has reinvented herself in the last couple of years from a quality actress to a commercially viable actress. JULIE & JULIA was essentially two films and her performance managed to keep the doo doo logs from one half from floating into the other.

George Clooney (Up in the Air)

Colin Firth (A Single Man)

Morgan Freeman (Invictus)

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)

This is a lock. Clooney was playing Clooney, Freeman was playing Freeman, Renner was playing Renner and Firth just had to play a nice guy having a breakdown. Bridges easily wins for a performance nowhere near as good as Mickey Rourke’s loss last year for THE WRESTLER. Bet the house.

This year they decided to add ten films which means some obvious clunkers made the cut. Let’s trim some fat. UP is a god damned cartoon. While a good one, they already have a kiddie picture category called Best Animated Film of the Year which it will win so no go daddy-o. A SIMPLE MAN is a Jewie Ingmar Bergman film. The Academy likes to think American cinema is on par with European classics so they tossed it on here. It won’t get a single vote. We’ve seen or read stories like AN EDUCATION a zillion times and this one is British. CRANK 2 has a better chance of winning as a write-in. UP IN THE AIR is the middle aged male version of AN EDUCATION and it’s only here in the hopes of women who fantasize that George Clooney is ready to settle down will put down their wine glass and cat long enough to tune in. The imbecilic INGLORIOUS BASTERDS & impressive DISTRICT 9 were nominated to get a fanboy audience to watch the ceremonies. They won’t and it doesn’t matter; neither is winning. THE BLIND SIDE is a crappy heart string pulling movie geared towards white guilt that manages to embarrass itself and Michael Oher. If it had any competition that would be PRECIOUS, a tougher film that doesn’t need whitey for a hand out. It’s the best film out of the ten but doesn’t stand a chance.

The battle, I’m sure you know is down to AVATAR vs. THE HURT LOCKER. The solid money is on the eye candy spectacle AVATAR. It’s been cleaning up on the trophy circuit but is nothing more than a poorly written environmental fantasy for the socially inept. AVATAR shouldn’t even be nominated. It’s a piece of shit. THE HURT LOCKER is a damn good original piece of work that deserves to win but sadly it won’t. Why? The way the voting works is the winner must have 51% of the votes so they keep voting until one film reaches the magic number. That almost eliminates DISTRICT 9 from skimming AVATAR votes. Then you have the highest grossing AVATAR vs. the lowest grossing THE HURT LOCKER. Only a few of the big box office hits have won OSCARS (Example TITANIC, RETURN OF THE KING) but no film has grossed as little as THE HURT LOCKER and won best picture. AVATAR also has bigger studio bucks behind it for lobbying the Academy. Chances are Kathryn Bigelow will win best director (first for a female) so that lessens the best picture chances. Hmmm….. Ah fuck it; I’m going for the underdog THE HURT LOCKER. It’s a real movie. I can’t wager on something as brain hemorrhage inducing as unobtanium.

a.k.a. Shadow of Death, The Edison Effect

Here’s a mess of a slasher mish-mash starring former NFL defensive end, Lyle Alzado, as the game show obsessed con Moeser. During his electrocution for the rape and murder of 23 men, women and children (he cackles before his execution, “it was actually 24“) the giant goon short circuits the entire prison resulting in a riot that leaves 13 guards and 37 inmates dead. Years later, the town folk don’t talk much about the event or the strange happenings at the abandoned prison. That is, until Robert Edwards (Anthony Perkins) shows up to direct his Women in Prison picture “Death House Dolls“.

Before we can enjoy the obvious fun of a reanimated Lyle Alzado zombie running around killing the crew of a W.I.P. set, we are forced to spend half an hour with our bland stock leads stunt girl, Susan Malone (Deborah Foreman from VALLEY GIRL), and her screenwriter boyfriend, David Harris (Clayton Rohner). It’s painful, but just as your mind wanders towards unpaid taxes, Moeser shows up with a giant jackhammer to save the bloody day.
The numerous in-jokes, rip-offs, groan-inducing stock characters and blatant use of dream sequences (very common around this time) to emulate the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series actually added more nostalgia than “seen it before” snobbery to my viewing experience.

Yeah it’s predictable, poorly written, and badly directed, but DESTROYER throws in enough nudity, explosions, rats, and body parts to make for a decent six packer. Anthony Perkins and the one note Alzado put forth some effort; seeing the big lug simulate the tornado tongue using a pair of scissors must have caused some serious soda spit takes from theater patrons. Sadly, Lyle Alzado would die four years later at age 43 from brain cancer blaming it on a 22year addiction to anabolic steroids. The same year as DESTROYER, Renny Harlin directed an electric chair horror film called PRISON starring Viggo Mortensen, Waldemar Korzeniowsky directed THE CHAIR and 1989 would see two more hit the big screen with Sean S. Cunningham’s THE HORROR SHOW and Wes Craven’s SHOCKER. Only available on VHS and Laserdisc, DESTROYER will most likely be the one forgotten.

★★★½ LADY VENGEANCE

The third film in his Vengeance Trilogy (SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, OLD BOY), Chan-wook Park's LADY VENGEANCE spins the tale of a young kidnapper’s assistant, Geum-ja Lee (Yeong-ae Lee), seeking revenge on her partner and child killer Mr. Baek (Min-sik Choi) who forced Geum-ja Lee to take the wrap for the death of hostage Park Won-mo by abducting Geum-ja Lee's daughter. The Kidnapping of a kidnapper, so to speak. Geum-ja Lee's beauty and the horrific nature of the crime cause her to become the latest media sensation, which she uses to her advantage by manipulating fellow inmates to help her hatch an elaborate revenge plot. Geum-ja Lee is a chameleon who can lovingly care for an elderly North Korean inmate to gain plans for an exotic gun and also become a smiling nursemaid as she slowly poisons the prison queen bee.

Upon her release, she reunites with her daughter and has a brief relationship with a co-worker, regaining a sense of family. Due to her past sins, Geum-ja Lee feels she is unworthy of such happiness. Her redemption can only be in the form of retribution for the families who lost their children by the hands of Mr. Baek. LADY VEGEANCE doesn't strive for the simple KILL BILL route, instead veering into one of the most imaginative revenge scenarios ever filmed.

LADY VENGEANCE does have its problems. Like SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, Chan-wook Parks seems overly pleased with his imagery and non-linear story telling. There are too many scenes that fail to advance the proceedings, goofy dream sequences, and post production trickery that pop you out of any sustained tonal flow. It doesn't go LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD on us, but the film would have been greatly improved by a more linear cut and 20 minute shave. Hell, it could use a rinse and repeat. Although LADY VENGEANCE constantly hits you in the face with symbolism pies, it does contain the cruel and violent shocks that South Korean Cinema is becoming notorious for; and the last half hour is a humdinger on the level of OLD BOY. Worthy of the time you will have to invest is the performance of Yeong-ae Lee who portrays Geum-ja Lee as a multi-layered and flawed individual light years from the stock characters that inhabit American, Hong Kong and Japanese revenge thrillers. This winner of a gazillion international film festival awards can be had on a Region 1 DVD by Tartan. The disc features a 40 minute interview with the director, 10 minute behind the scenes featurette and three audio commentary tracks. You can also rent or stream the film through Netflix.

★½ THE JAIL: WOMEN'S HELL

Bruno, Bruno, Bruno. A year before his death, 74 year old director Bruno Mattei returned to the W.I.P. genre for this shot on video craptasterpiece. Made in the Philippines with a cast resembling the islands’ best pimps and hos, one has to imagine the script was written on a cocktail napkin the night before principal videography began. The plot, if any, goes something like this: Three women are sent bysteamboat to an undisclosed jungle prison called "The Home of Lost Souls". Here they experience the usual beatings, whippings, cat fights and humiliations. The butch warden has a deal on the side with a local pimp who forces them to dance in bikinis at a nightclub and sexually service the patrons. Tired of cages, rape, torture and rats, the girls kill the resident snitch and escape into the jungle. The pimp learns of the bust outbeforehand and arranges the ol' MOST DANGEROUS GAME bit for some of his clients. Complete with cannibal tribe guides, they stalk the inmates and butcher them in what feels to be Bruno's attempt to top Umberto Lenzi's MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY.

THE JAIL: WOMEN'S HELL is packed with both naked and ripped flesh, but also contains some of the worst acting and head banging dialogue I have ever experienced. Seriously, this makes MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE seem like Masterpiece Theater. Screenwriter Antonio Tentori (A CAT IN THE BRAIN) must be a 12 year old from Compton because he uses the word "Bitches" more than the entire N.W.A. discography. Then there’s the score. That goddamned score. It's a 90 second rip of the Empire's theme from STAR WARS on a loop through the whole film regardless of the scene! . Drunk college kids could probably invent a drinking game with this gorefest, but I'm convinced this flick will cause cancer quicker than the gruel at Georgia Southern University’s Landrum Hall. Originally screened at the Marché du Film in Cannes, THE JAIL: A WOMEN'S HELL was never picked up for distribution and is only available on a Czech bootleg DVD. If you would like to buy the rights to this film for any territory on the planet, you can contact FilmExport Group s.r.l. You could change the dialogue, add a plot, put your band on the soundtrack or make an obscure reference to your alma mater. Anything would be an improvement. It pains me to give a film in which a woman's breast is hacked off and the fatty tissue within sucked out by a sicko such a low rating but It's one big aural mental retardation. No wonder Bruno died of a brain tumor. I feel one coming on!

Yes, it's the seedy cover of a Men's pulp magazine come to life in glorious widescreen color. Aristocrat Martine Foucher (Michele Mercier) and a whole bunch of other hotties are transported across the blarney sea where the chained lassies must mine swamp gold and bend to the sexual whims of their captors just to achieve a moments rest. With the arrival of dreamy Commander Henri Vallière (Guy Madison), looks like change is in the sultry air; but are things truly what they seem?

Veteran Peplum Writer/ Director Domenico Paolella (HERCULES AGAINST THE BARBARIANS, DANGER! DEATH RAY!) knows how to shoot an epic and keeps the action moving - only slowing down to linger on some curves. Predating the book, but obviously inspired by the tall tales of PAPILLON authored by Henri Charrière, WOMEN OF DEVIL'S ISLAND should be sought out by all land lubbers of cleavage classics. The version available by Mill Creek Entertainment's “50 Drive-in Movie Classics”box set is a nasty chewed up full screen sepia tone print of the US release which cuts out an interracial romance. Luckily, the film is also available uncut on DVD in a beautiful widescreen Italian& French language DVD with only Spanish subtitles under the title ATRAPADAS EN LA ISLA DEL DIABLO. You might not understand the plot but Italian and French sounds sexier than English anyway. I synced the English audio with the International print. I'm a nerd.

I'm a huge fan of the original Female Prisoner #701 series. Such a nerd for it that, in 2001, I tracked down a print of the second film in the series JOSHUU SASORI: DAI-41 ZAKKYO-BO (FEMALE CONVICT PRISONER 701: JAILHOUSE 41) and had it shown at Atlanta's Starlight Six Drive-in, causing misery to many inebriated subtitle-phobic rednecks. It would be unfair to judge this shot on video (J-Vid) re-imagining by the same criteria as the 38 year old original. Other than using the Meiko Kaji theme song Urami Bushi, there are not many similarities anyway.

In this version, housewife Sasori (Miki Mizuno) becomes the victim of some psychotic thugs hired by a wealthy bioengineer to assassinate her father in-law. These thrill kill super villains like to get their kicks as well, so they force her to kill noodle-happy dad and the sister in-law while her cop husband (Dylan Kuo) watches. By some inexplicable comic logic, she never explains who forced her to do it and the husband never saw the four fashion foes standing in their house!

Sassori is sent to prison where the inmates fight in caged death matches for booze and give the fat warden (Lam Suet) sucky sucky. When her husband tries to kill her on visiting day, she looses all hope. After several humiliations, Sassori visually learns kung fu from watching fights and murders the Queen Bee's sister. This brings down the wrath of all the inmates whom she fights to the death. Then the warden has Sassori thrown into some outdoor suspended bondage where she expires until she is finally saved by a martial arts guru called the Corpse Collector (Simon Yam) who turns her into a sword wielding killing machine with a 10 second training montage. Seeking vengeance, she reunites with her husband who turned into an alcoholic musician with an erased memory and has become an attraction for a local bar. Many sword fights follow.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the end of this film was shot first then the production ran out of money. Other than the lighting, the first hour of Sasori looks like a 50 buck budget and contains so many annoying fading, zooming and dissolving jump cuts punctuated by loud sound effects it almost induces seizures. The prison sequence is so no-frills that the number designating Sassori as the infamous prisoner 701 appears to be written in Sharpie on a “Hello my name is” sticker! The last 30 minutes resembles a completely different film with a 500K budget and better crew. There are even plot revelations in the end that were never set up in the beginning, so they don’t make any sense. What the hell?!

Wacky plot and jaw-dropping logic aside, the biggest problem with Sasori is the lead Miki Mizuno. She has good choreography and wire skills but she isn't the least bit attractive. Her face is very skeletal and her frame doesn't fill the sexy costumes. Not even wig changes create an illusion of beauty. There are some nice looking women in this movie who run the gamut from butchy hot to lipstick femme fatale and each displays more on screen charisma and acting chops than Mizuno who apparently is a TV star in Japan.

Let's be honest, with J-VID, it all comes down to the sex and violence quota. Sadly, Sassori misses the mark. There is only one wet t-shirt scene in the skin category and the gore is all over the map. Occasionally it enters MACHINE GIRL territory but the majority of kills are pathetic and never graphic. Director Joe Ma relies more on showing a bloody prop than performing an actual effect. There is one cheap but very creative scene involving a vodka bottle but it can't save the overall experience. This is for die hard J-Vid fans only. Meiko Kaji fans should avoid at all cost. SASORI is currently only available with English subtitles, so bad they should be called “Ingrish” subs, on a PAL format region 2 DVD from the UK. There is an unsubbed Thai and Japanese release with the same running time.

Here's a piece of chocolate thunder from down under! This is the tale of nine unattractive female convicts who are constantly raped by even less desirable drunk soldiers and horny aristocrats in an unnamed Australian colony during the late 1700's. When noblewoman June (Elizabeth Harrington) pulls coitus interruptus with a musket on a young inmates attacker, the prisoners break loose and flee into the outback. After many hardships on their walkabout from hell, they are befriended by an aboriginal girl who teaches them how to forage and create their own Wicca utopia free from ugly men folk.

Not knowing the full story behind the soldier’s death, Capt. McEwan (Martin Phelan) believes June to have been kidnapped by the women. He sets out to find ol' koala face and low and behold is quite shocked to find his beloved playing naked native with a group of crazy whores and lesbians. With his mind seriously frazzle rocked, he grabs some soldiers and a cannon to blow this heathen settlement to kingdom come.

What opens as an artsy fartsy period piece quickly sharks into full blown exploitation with tons of screaming bush beaver (Mappa Tassie or Map of Tasmania in Australian) running around killing' folks and acting like werewolf women. Apparently, this 16mm mess was mostly improvisational and the actresses rebelled on set over the films ending. It's an ugly and rarely interesting feminist "epic fail" that was successful at the box office due to the controversial lesbian themes, full frontal nudity and 13 year old nude actress Rozanna Lilley. Yeah, all the wrong reasons.

The film is only available in Australia from Beyond Home Entertainment on a special two disc DVD edition which includes a 20 page booklet, commentary, interviews, two featurettes, stills, four short films by director Tom Cowan and a trailer. The Australian Film Board seems to believe this weekend workshop is an important piece of cinema. This makes me believe, if someone filmed 90 minutes of dingo poo, they wouldgive them a screening at the Sydney Opera House. The director would go on to be a cameraman for one episode of the reality TV show SURVIVOR: AUSTRALIA. I repeat, one episode. Poorly lit, badly edited, no script, ambiguous ending, child porn and enough nasty wombats to give ya the liquid laugh. Skip it. If you want some good Aussie entertainment, seek out the Brian Trechard-Smith films STUNT ROCK, DEATH CHEATERS and THE MAN FROM HONG KONG.

BIG BUST OUT: The Green-Eyed Blonde (1957) Full Review

Here's a misleading title produced by Doris Day's sketchy third husband, Martin Melcher, for the popular JD market. It does contain a curvaceous teen named Greeneyes, a.k.a. Phyllis (Susan Oliver), but this sordid tale is really about ticked off little Betsy (Linda Plowman), the new fish at The Martha Washington School for Girls. After a kooky credit sequence and theme song resembling a 50's sitcom, we learn that Betsy is being incarcerated for giving birth and not revealing who knocked her up!

Everyone but the audience is clueless to the fact that the father of her child is the boyfriend of Betsy's alcoholic mother. When these sauced guardians show up on visiting day to inform Betsy they are taking the unwanted runt to an orphanage, suicidal inmate Cuckoo (Norma Jean Nilsson) snatches the baby from a wooden crate in the backseat of their car. It takes half a day and a few bars later before they realize the little bastard is gone. After a few seconds of drunken thought, they return to the reformatory to inform Betsy they found a good home for her baby.

The inmates hide the toddler and form stronger bonds from the new responsibilities of motherhood and Betsy finally warms up to her kid, but the staff eventually becomes suspicious when the girls constantly break into loud group singing to cover the babies crying and Renie (Beverly Long) is busted burying soiled diapers made from the disappearing linen. The baby is found in the possession of Greeneye and taken to an orphanage resulting in a massive and quite impressive reform school riot.

THE GREEN-EYED BLONDE tries to cram as many moral arguments into the running time as possible. Most of its ideas center on the answer to juvenile delinquency and reformation being the need for a loving family environment. Surprisingly, for the time, this isn't a segregated facility and African American Inmate Trixie (Tommie Moore) is the only character who is reformed when her father returns from overseas and gives her the love that her busy working Aunts can't deliver. THE GREEN-EYED BLONDE puts forth some fairly progressive racial attitudes for a film that dishes up such heavy spoonfuls of traditional male ideas of a woman’s role in society. When the inmates name the child Buddy because a baby is a girl's best friend, you really get a good serving of the backward ideas on display.

Oscar winner Dalton Trumbo's (ROMAN HOLIDAY, JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN) script even tosses in some Christian pro-life messages in the form of a new, caring head matron who grew up in an orphanage and turned out just fine; the importance of having an infant around at Christmas like baby Jesus, and an outlandish moment when Cuckoo, to the horror of the sane inmates, kills a kitten because she felt it was better off dead since nobody wanted it. These are all with varying degrees of subtly and for the most part enhance the exploitation experience and stifle the intended message.

So what about Greeneyes? Well, her story feels like an added wrap around to cash in on the success of UNTAMED YOUTH with Mamie Van Doren from the same year. Susan Oliver does appear throughout the film, but often the camera will cut within a scene to her on a different set. After being the one caught with the baby and given a longer sentence, she breaks out and reunites with her paroled boyfriend. We later hear on a radio that the two died in a police shoot out. Yeah, it's a half-assed attempt at the virtues of virginity negated by the fact that they were running away to get married anyway?!? Isn't this thing about the power of love and family? I guess family does win out since Betsy never fingers the rapist and her mother doesn't do a stint for child abandonment. Maybe the message is really, “Don’t be a snitch!” There is plenty of jailhouse code on display for one to make the case. Anyway, everything abruptly ends leaving many plots unresolved. If you don't take this garbage seriously, it's a quick watch full of chuckles, head scratchers and the occasional jaw dropper. Did I mention the riot? I must admit, I did enjoy watching a gaggle of gals do demo on a staircase, trash some windows and fling themselves at barb wire fences. It was more lively than most of these reform school yawns.

For you Trekies out there, Susan Oliver went on to play Nina in the two part STAR TREK Menagerie episodes. Producer Martin Melcher would go on to squander Doris Day's money in bad investments, turn down the offer for old Doris to play Mrs. Robinson in THE GRADUATE (without her knowledge) and die right after signing his wife to a CBS TV series (without her consent). Obviously, Melcher liked to live up to the high moral codes of the pictures he produced.

Every once in awhile, I'll be visiting my therapist, the shiny keg handles at the bar, and some sad sack sits next to me and complains about their inability to obtain a girlfriend, which is basically another way of saying they can't get laid. We are all animals and built within us is the natural physical and psychological desire to reproduce or as Al Green would say "Get it On". Sex isn’t a problem for the female species who only have to say, “Wanna go fuck in that supply closet?”

Bangin’ broads comes natural to many men but how does someone who wears a Spock uniform engage in Pon Farr without enlisting the help of a Klingon pimp? Well, it's pretty simple. First take off the fucking Vulcan ears and I'll teach you something I did learn in college.

STEP 1:

Clean up your place and buy the nicest bedding you can afford. Purchase the following: 1 box of lubricated condoms, 1 low wattage soft light bulb, 1 bottle of good red wine, 1 six pack of special release microbrew, 1 six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon and the necessary ingredients to make mojitos.

STEP 2: Practice making a good mojito. Make some mixed CD's of various genres of shit you hate. Do some research and find out what people think is good. Nothing they may find obscure, loud or new. Slow nostalgia is what you're going to need.

STEP 3: Wash some decent clothes. Take a shower. Cut your nails. Get a haircut if you have to.

STEP 4: Do not drink anything. At 11:00 PM put on a porno film. Nothing weird. Watch this film from beginning to end without touching yourself or having a drink.

STEP 5: Brush your teeth. Change the light bulb in your bedroom. Leave it on with the door open. Position your sofa to face the bedroom. Now drive to the bar or club that is most likely to have an event that would interest single women.

STEP 6: Have your first drink. Survey the women in the bar to determine who you want to engage. These ladies are intoxicated so you look better than you actually are. If you feel that you are a 7 on the old 1-10 scale than you are probably a 5 that currently looks like a 7 to this boozed up crowd with a three hour head start. This is important. You want to pick someone who is the same on the scale as you currently appear. If you are a 3 in reality don't go looking past a 5 or your success rate will drop by 40%. Never go for an 8-10. It will just be annoying later or get derailed by someone better looking than you. If you must go after a woman in a pack, choose the least desirable or she will probably cock block you later. Your hormones should be raging now and a second drink will boost your confidence into a focused determination to achieve the task at hand.

STEP 7: Engage said target with a compliment and be the one to leave the conversation. Have another drink. If target approaches then buy her a drink. Listen to everything that comes out of her mouth. The only thing coming out of your mouth should be humorous and not full of obscure references. If conversation hits the 10 minute mark start steering it towards different types of alcohol. When conversation reaches 20-30 minute mark, it should be around last call and suggest having a drink at your place which you have already stocked. "I make the best mojitos", "I have a special microbrew that hasn't been released yet" or "My uncle owns a vineyard and gave me a special vintage that I've been saving for a special occasion". Some bullshit like that.

STEP 8: If you don't own a decent car, you should have rented or borrowed one. Anyway, back at your place break out the alcohol, start the pot of coffee and put on the CD with the genre of music she is interested in. When going to get your second drink, make a move. It will work. I've gotten you a live intoxicated woman who has been listening to her favorite music in your place and staring at a nicely lit bedroom. You're on fire from the porno. If you can’t pull this off, become a monk and get fiddled by old men.

STEP 9: After fornicating like the cheap nasty animal you are, get a cup of coffee. Offer her one and explain that you have to go to work and can drop her off on the way.

Now if something compelled you to become interested in this woman have her spend the night. Chances are she is going to wake up screaming and feel ashamed for getting’ porked by a hideous mud troll. Always abort your mission if you find during the course of conversation that the she owns more than 1 cat. You do not want them knowing where you live and despite being better looking they will stalk you.

If you truly are looking for a relationship, lure her back with a common interest such as marijuana or records. Hell, I don’t know what your into, just be honest from the start. Get to know her and make a good impression. Suggest having dinner and take her somewhere classy and fun.

If you're trying to keep a woman, listen more, make confident decisions, spend less money on yourself, clean yourself up, learn a new clam lickin' move, and go down on her one time without asking for any form of reciprocation. If that doesn't work, you shouldn't be together anyway. That’s about it. Anyone can get laid or fall in love for a period of time.

Men's Magazine Flexi Discs

6", 7", 8", and 9" flexi discs were popular in Japan where they were known as sound-sheets (sono shito) and were often in traditional round format. In other areas, flexi disks were usually square and often included in a magazine. For example, the American magazine National Geographic's January 1979 issue included a flexi disk of whale sounds called "Songs of the Humpback Whale." With a production order of 10,500,000 copies, it became the largest single press run of any record at the time.

Why am I talking about Flexi Discs on a blog called Big Bust Out? Well, it just makes sense that the porn industry would utilize flexi discs to compete with the burgeoning home video market of the early 80s. They had already used gimmicks like scratch and sniff centerfolds, 3D spreads, life sized centerfolds, trading cards, calendars, swing club directories, etc. Audio was the next logical step. Velvet magazine even produced an off shoot called VELVET TALKS from 1979-85 that featured a flexi disc every month! These disc are pretty rare but I've assembled 3 turned into MP3. I've included a cover of the issue and the features it contained within.

Cooking With Vincent Price: THE RECORD

I've always been a fan of Vincent Price's hammy acting in classics like HIS KIND OF WOMAN (1951), THE HOUSE OF WAX (1953), THE FLY (1958), Roger Corman's Poe Adaptations, William Castle flicks, and A.I.P. Horror. When I was a kid, I loved him as Egghead on BATMAN and as the narrator on Alice Cooper's song Devil's Food. I owned his Shrunken Head toy, Hangman game and was impressed by his attempt to bring art to the common man at SEARS.

Did you know he fancied himself a chef? Vincent and his second wife Mary Grant not only founded the Gallery at East Los Angeles College they wrote a cook book called A Treasury of Great Recipes in 1965. Vincent also showed Johnny Carson how to poach fish on THE TONIGHT SHOW and had his own British cooking program called COOKING PRICEWISE.

In 1977 he recorded INTERNATIONAL COOKING COURSE a 12 audio cassette set of recipes and cooking techniques which included topics such as Dining At Versailles, Delights From The Sultan's Pantry, Cucina Italiana, Dinner At The Casbah, The Bard's Board (with Shakesperian vocalisations!), Classical Spanish Cuisine, La Cocina Mejicana, Bounty Of Paradise, The Wok, Exotic Delights From The Far East, Foods From The Austro-Hungarian Empire, Food Of The Gods. The set also included a bonus cassette called Wine is Elegance in co-operation with the California Wine Institute.

I'm not sure if the following tracks are from this series but I highly doubt it. If anyone has any information on their original source, please contact me so I can post the correct information. They are pretty damn funny nonetheless.

One of the more bizarre relics from the Golden Age of American adult cinema is the 1976 film TEENAGE TWINS starring real life identical twin sisters Brooke & Taylor Young. Both sisters who were previously in the films THUNDERBUNS (1976) and SWEET CAKES (1976), got their big break (yeah, right!)with co-starring roles in this feature.

Honestly, all I can remember from this film is one of the sisters masturbating with a bible and the inevitable scenes of incest. Since my memory is shot out or blocked out, here is a synopsis by rduchmann from IMDB:

"Some video copies of this film were retitled TWIN TARTS in the late 1980s, when many films with "Teenage" or "Young" were re-christened. Film is a fairly cheap-looking, about 60m, Carter Stevens effort with a script that ventures a bit for a porn grinder. Chief gimmick was that the femme leads were allegedly twin sisters taking the plunge into adult movies as a team.

Sisters Prudence and Hope, living with their mother and stepfather, share an unwelcome connection. Good girl Pru receives telepathic signals whenever trampy Hope gets sexual, and this makes Pru a little uncomfortable. Meanwhile, their stepfather and his friends are searching for a copy of the NECRONOMICON (script is credited to Al Hazred!) in order to pursue black magic goals. I recently received an e-mail from hotlunch666 asking me the following:

I don't want to discourage readers of bigbustout from writing me but this individuals enthusiasm is not what I envisioned when creating the website. I must admit that I've never had a fetish for women in prison films nor has any other fetish manifested itself in my life. My favorite sexploitation film of all time is Paul Glicker's The Cheerleaders but I've never felt an attraction to the peppy rabble rousers. I like the film because of the writing. The girls are beautiful but certain fundamentals of cheap drive-in filmmaking must be present in a production for me to derive any pleasure from the viewing. Even in voyeuristic cinema such as Mondo Topless and Orgy of the Dead, there is enough charm on display to elevate them past a mere stroke-athon.

There are several reasons why I review women in prison films. The obvious being it's the only genre that hasn't been reviewed to death and there is an endless supply of films. Another motivation is they generally have elements I enjoy from a drive-in experience such as strong female characters, insane dialog,evil villains,funky scores, gun fights and explosions.

If you have a women in prison fetish, well that's just fine but you might want to work on your attitude towards women. Yes, they are different then men but once you realize they are intelligent individuals you may better your odds at having an actual human to indulge in your fetish. If a love lost has made you so bitter towards the opposite sex, maybe therapy or employment as a correctional officer should be in your future.

I have reviewed some shot on video adult women in prison films but since these offer nothing more than modern day loops used in ten minute increments for jacking off, I don't plan on any future reviews. If an adult feature with a women in prison theme is shot on 16 or 35mm film and contains an actual script like some of the films from the 70's porn industry, then eventually I will get around to reviewing it.

The Stalin film series is actually from Czechlosavakia and caters to the S&M lifestyle which is for the most part made up of sociopaths preying on individuals with low self esteem. That has been my observation from working on the fringe of that industry. I can't derive any pleasure from reviewing S&M, Bondage, Scat, Hot Carls, Bukake, Cincinnati Bow Ties, etc. The initial beer drinking college shock value of these worthless images is long gone. These are not movies they are the documentation of a perversion. If you like that crap, good for you.

I'm not trying to jump on any morality soap box. I'm against any form of censorship and feel that we are all perfectly capable of making our own decisions. I'm glad you enjoy the website but please be aware of my motivations as the creator of bigbustout.com.
